The Federal Supreme Court (STF) authorized the resumption of the Sanepar auction for sewage services in 112 municipalities in Paraná.

The process had been suspended in May due to an injunction obtained by Aegea, which challenged a clause in the notice that prohibited a company from winning more than one lot in the auction.

The suspension was revoked after Minister Flávio Dino reconsidered the decision, allowing the auction to proceed as planned. The auction, divided into three lots, foresees a total investment of R$2.9 billion in sanitation infrastructure.

The goal is to ensure that at least 90% of the population of the cities involved have access to sewage collection and treatment by 2033, in accordance with the new Legal Framework for Sanitation

A study released this Tuesday (3) by the Trata Brasil Institute shows that the bottlenecks for the universalization of basic sanitation in Brazil go beyond the lack of investment by governments and companies in the sector.

In order for the country to eliminate the deficit in water and sewage services, families themselves will have to spend money on works, which includes installing sinks, toilets and pipes connecting to the network.

R$242.5 billion is needed to readjust all residential sanitation infrastructure in Brazil, an amount that will come mainly from poor or lower middle class families — who are the most affected by the lack of sanitation.
